Use the WhatsApp Business API without giving up your number

You no longer have to choose between the WhatsApp Business app and a proper team inbox. Coexistence gives you both, on the same number.

For years, moving a business number onto the WhatsApp Business API meant losing the WhatsApp Business app. The number was migrated, the app stopped working on your phone, and everything had to happen through whatever software you had connected. For a shop owner who runs the business from a handset, that was usually a bad trade — so most people stayed on the Business app and put up with one phone, one person, and no record of who replied to what.

Coexistence removes the trade. Your number works in the Business app on your phone and in a shared inbox at the same time.

What coexistence actually means

A normal API connection registers your number with the Cloud API, which is what takes it away from the Business app. A coexistence connection deliberately skips that registration step. The number is never migrated, so the app on your phone keeps working — same chats, same notifications, same everything.

What you gain is a second way in. Your team can see and reply to the same conversations from ClusterBox, and every reply is attributed to whoever sent it.

What syncs, and what does not

What happens
Chat historyYour past conversations can be imported so the inbox is not empty on day one. Meta asks you to approve this during signup, and you can decline — if you do, the connection still works, it just starts from the next message.
ContactsSaved contacts sync across, so customers arrive with the names you already gave them rather than as bare phone numbers.
Replies from your phoneA message you send from the WhatsApp Business app appears in ClusterBox too, so the thread stays complete no matter where you answered from.
Your numberUnchanged. It is not migrated, and the Business app keeps working.

The practical effect is that nothing you do today has to change. You can keep answering from your phone out of habit and still get a complete record — which matters when you add a second person and need to know what was already said.

Connecting your number

  1. 1Open the ClusterBox app, tap the menu, then Channels.
  2. 2Choose to connect WhatsApp. This opens Meta's own signup flow.
  3. 3Sign in with the Facebook account that manages your business, and select the number you already use.
  4. 4When Meta asks whether to share chat history, choose what you are comfortable with. Sharing makes the inbox useful immediately; declining is fine.
  5. 5Finish the flow and return to ClusterBox. Conversations start arriving.

Who this is for

Coexistence is worth it the moment more than one person needs to see customer messages, or the moment you need a record of what was promised. If you are the only person answering and you never need to look anything up, the Business app on its own is genuinely fine.

  • You have staff who answer customers, and replies are getting duplicated or missed.
  • You cannot tell which orders came from which conversation.
  • Someone is away and nobody else can see their chats.
  • You want order and payment history attached to the person you are talking to.

Common questions before you connect

The two things people worry about most are losing the number and losing their chats. Neither happens: the number is never migrated, and history is imported only if you approve it. If you decline, nothing is deleted — the import simply does not run.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose the WhatsApp Business app on my phone?

No. A coexistence connection skips the Cloud API registration step that normally migrates a number away from the app. Your number stays on the Business app and keeps working exactly as it does now.

Do my existing chats come across?

They can. Meta asks during signup whether you want to share chat history. If you approve, past conversations are imported. If you decline, the connection still works and simply starts from the next message.

If I reply from my phone, does my team see it?

Yes. Messages sent from the WhatsApp Business app are echoed into ClusterBox, so the conversation stays complete regardless of where it was answered.

Do I need a new number or a second SIM?

No. Coexistence exists precisely so you can use the number your customers already have.

How do I know if my number qualifies?

If it is currently live on the WhatsApp Business app, it qualifies. Meta's signup flow detects this from the number itself and selects coexistence automatically — there is nothing you need to choose.
